George Gershwin was a composer and pianist; his best-known works are Rhapsody in Blue (1924), An American in Paris (1928), "I Got Rhythm" (1930), and the opera Porgy and Bess (1935), which included the hit "Summertime". James Pinckney Miller was born in San Antonio in 1919. Having graduated from Rice University in 1941, and serving in the Navy during WWII, Miller turned to writing as a career.
